Perimeter
- What is it? Perimeter security encompasses measures to protect the border of your internal LAN - most commonly it is the security you put in front of any connection that leaves your network (e.g. to the Internet or other sites). The most common example is using firewall technology on an Internet connection, however it is not limited to this as other security measures are needed at the perimeter of your network (e.g. Wireless security).
- Who would use it? Any organisation that has links that connect their LAN to any other network or that uses public services from the Internet.
- What's involved? A full assessment of your LAN and WAN to determine where the vulnerabilites exist and what the threats are. Many incorrectly believe that putting a firewall at the Internet border is sufficient to protect the internal LAN.
