SANs and virtualisation go hand-in-hand - especially if there is a need for High Availability, DR, or VM mobility. Traditionally a hardware SAN has been the preference, however as virtualisation alone can be expensive, the sheer cost of a SAN/Virtualisation project can slow the adoption of the technology.

DataCore offers an attractive alternative: it is a software (virtual) SAN solution which has the following advantages over a hardware SAN:

1. The SAN technology is vendor and hardware independant, resulting in no expensive technology lock-ins (storage devices can be a mixture of IBM, EMC, HP, DELL, etc)
2. The capital deployment cost, running costs and expansion costs are less than a comparable hardware SAN per terabyte (TB)
3. The default functionality supplied is typically greater than hardware SANs (thin provisioning, mirroring, HA, etc)
4. Performance is better than or comparable to hardware SANs due to DataCore's caching technology
5. As DataCore is hardware independant, you can re-use your existing hardware or SAN as a redundant DR solution, saving on implementation capital spend.
